Text Box: Back to Hawaii

2/21/96—3/3/96

On Friday, our anniversary day, we decided to hike to Makahiku Falls. Along the way, I found a tree to climb and we found some smaller falls. We decided to keep going, so we continued around a bamboo forest and hiked through a thick rain forest until we saw Waimoku Falls in the distance. We continued to the base of the 400' falls, seeing only a couple of people along the way, but lots of beauty.

On Thursday, we started heading around to Hāna . Along the way, we saw some humpback whales  blow their spouts, play, and even breach. Of course, we saw lots of waterfalls and one-lane bridges.

The resort consisted of a bunch of cottages along the shore. The room had no TV, radio, A/C, clock, or carpet. It did, however, have beautiful furnishings, plenty of privacy, and our own Jacuzzi. The resort was not the only surprise that I had in store for Madeline.

We drove to the Seven Pools, where Madeline realized just how cold mountain water was, even in Hawaii

I booked a horseback adventure along the shore for Madeline, while I explored the area by foot

The end of our trip took us to a couple days in Hāna, the secluded area of Maui. The Road To Hāna is a 68-mile long stretch of highways which connects Kahului with the town of Hāna in east Maui. Although Hāna is only about 52 miles from Kahului, a typical trip takes about three hours, as the road is very winding and narrow and passes over 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one-lane bridges.

Once there, we stayed at the beautiful Hāna Maui, which was owned by Sheraton at the time. It was the most unique hotel we had ever stayed in to date, and even today ranks in the top two or three. It was a good way to end our trip, relaxing, doing a little hiking and horseback riding for Madeline, and just enjoying our solitude over our actual anniversary date.

On Saturday, we had a few hours to kill before our late flight, so we checked out a red sand beach near our resort, then drove the winding road back to the airport in our beautiful convertible. We arrived home the next day.
