The COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from seeing my family in 2020. We were hopeful that we all survived the year okay, not only because of the pandemic, but because there were other health issues with my folks. It was a pretty stressful time for all of us: my sisters who were trying to care for them, my parents that never left the house for almost a year, and my brother and I for feeling so helpless down south. Things finally started getting better in early 2021 when we all got vaccinated. Tony’s family planned a cross-country college tour for Amber, so when he figured out his dates to be in Indiana, we booked our trip accordingly. We left on a Wednesday night and spent most of the next four days with everyone in Greensburg. As is typical when my family gets together, we had a lot of laughs.

Text Box: Return to the Midwest

It was Madeline’s first time on an airplane in a year and a half, and she was a bit apprehensive about Covid. We got into Indy late on Wednesday and stayed at a hotel with a very interesting piece of art over the bed.

On Thursday, we saw my parents along with Tony, Katherine, Payton, and Amber. It was kind of nice that us two boys got to hang out with the folks alone, since we hadn’t seen them in so long.

On Friday, we did a nice walk with Tony & Katherine and that evening, we met up with the other family members at Izzy’s in Batesville. We had a room to ourselves, which was nice, and we took a few photos.

On Saturday, we did another walk with Tony & Katherine, which we enjoyed thoroughly because of the conversations. We spent more time with mom and dad and then Mark & Sandi hosted a dinner at their house that night. The 17-year cicadas were out in town, which made for some fun.

Sunday morning we took my parents to church. We then went back to Sandi’s house for more food. We said our goodbyes to the Wolters and then to my folks. When we got to the Indy airport, nearly everything was shut down, so we had a very interesting dinner. It was a really nice trip, and we can’t wait to do it again.
