We woke up to our third capital city in our third country in three days. We had been to Austria before this trip, but not to Vienna. The day began with a little sightseeing bus ride through the historical city, and then on to Schönbrunn Palace. There, we toured both the inside and the beautiful gardens. We even saw a marionette show, which was both cool and creepy at the same time. When we returned to the AmaLea, we got on some bikes and rode in the sweltering heat to Klosterneuburg Abbey. It was about 6 miles each way, so what better way to seek some relief than a wine house. By this time, we had already made some really good friends.

At about 5:30 in the morning, we found ourselves in a lock. The process of rising up so that we could continue upstream was fascinating. This was only one of nearly two dozen locks we’d be going through. We hopped on the bus with Pam, Steve, Jim, Darlene, and Michelle and rode through the city of Vienna. It would have been nice to spend more time in some of the historical places, but it was nice just seeing them.

We drove to Schönbrunn Palace, the summer home of Queen Maria Theresa Habsburg. The first thing we did was pass through some gardens and down into a kitchen area, learning how to make apple strudel. We continued through more gardens in the back of the palace, taking photos like that of the two-faced Roman God, Janus. We went inside the palace and saw the Great Gallery and the bedroom of Maria Theresa.

We ended our tour of the palace by watching a marionette show, going backstage afterwards and Madeline even tried her skills out at working one.

When we returned to the ship, we immediately got on bikes and rode 6 miles to Klosterneuburg Abbey. The ride was hot, and both myself and Madeline found ways to cool off. The monastery church was beautiful when we poked our heads inside, but then it was time to ride 6 more miles back.

We had a nice Austrian dinner after we cleaned up from our bike ride, then took a photo in our cabin with the modern part of town in the background. The night was not over, though, as we went to Heuriger Wolff Wine House. We sat at a table with our new friends, drank a lot of wine, and then moved out into the vineyard to check out the grapes. We took a group photo with Steve, Darlene, Pam, and Michelle, and Madeline took a selfie with Josh as well. Another end to another great day.
