Although we arrived in Linz, today was all about Salzburg. The first thing we did, though, was go to the village of Bad Dürrnberg, where we checked out a salt mine. It was fun literally walking from Austria to Germany underground. The mines were what made this area rich, and we had fun on the slides. From there, we went into Salzburg and toured with the group for a while, and then enjoyed the city on our own. When we came back to the ship, we had dinner in the special dining area with our new friends.

We docked in Linz and then left early and headed towards Salzburg. We arrived in the small village of Bad Dürrnberg and had some free time before our tour. The town was built on a steep hill, so we naturally walked up the road and checked out the church, Mater Admirabilis. The church was small, but pretty, and the view from the hill was spectacular. Our guides told us that no one ever did that before, and so they didn’t even know what was up there.

It was time for the mines, so we put on our special clothes, took a photo, straddled a train-like shuttle, and went deep into the earth. We saw photos of people in the mines in the early 1900’s, and then it was time for us to ride the slide. We straddled a smooth piece of wood and slid on our butts. We also crossed an underground lake, walked back and forth between Austria and Germany, and saw a man preserved in the salt.

We went to lunch at Hofbräu Kaltenhausen, and had a feast!

We left the mine and traveled into Salzburg, starting our walking tour in Mirabell Gardens. To the locals, the gardens are just part of the 17th century palace. To us, it’s where the filmed the Do-Re-Mi song from The Sound of Music. In either case, they are beautiful.

We crossed the Makartsteg Bridge, a pedestrian bridge where couples attach their love locks.

On the other side of the river, we found Mozart’s home. We had time to roam the city, so we returned to the Christmas eggshell store we visited with Mäggi a number of years earlier. We also saw the plaza in front of the Salzburg Cathedral.

After our long day, we returned to the ship to have dinner with our new friends: Darlene, Theresa, Will, Michelle, Steve, Pam, and Jim. We sat in the private room and just enjoyed each other’s company. In the evening, we crossed under a really low bridge.
