Delaware was Madeline’s 49th state. We drove to Rehoboth Beach and spent a few hours there on the old boardwalk, and then spent the night up in Wilmington.

To finalize our quest for Madeline to hit her 50 states by the age of 50, we visited the last two states on her list: Delaware and West Virginia. We used Washington, DC as our starting point, spending a couple of days in our nation’s capital before moving into Wilmington and then into the panhandle of West Virginia.

While we were on the tour bus, we saw the Nelson Mandela statue shortly after it was unveiled at the South African Embassy

Part of our MVC deal at the Marriott was free tickets to the Newseum. At left is a part of one of the World Trade Center towers and all the headlines after 9/11.

After leaving Delaware, we drove through parts of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland, and ended up at Harper’s Ferry. Madeline literally walked across the Potomac River on a railway bridge to step into her 50th state. Later we drove in and got her picture at the far right, and then had dinner in the small town of Capon Bridge, where we ate Mexican (odd choice of restaurants in a small town in WV)

Before we got on a plane to head home, we toured Mount Vernon. It was a bit surreal to walk through a house that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and others once stood in or sat on the porch and stared out at the Potomac.
